Two in the Hand Brooch

The reverse of the old maxim about the value of having a bird in the hand.

We know of two examples of this motif – probably not from the same mold – and dated by find locations (in Dordrecht and Rotterdam) to 1325-1375 and 1375-1425 respectively. One of them has lost most of the scroll; in the other the text is illegible. If a complete example that makes sense is ever found, we will correct the mold.
