Toy Gridiron

An absolute necessity for the toy kitchen for fast days. This adorable little gridiron, with legs to keep your food up above the coals and ashes, comes complete with two fish. Mac made the mold and he identifies them as European sea bass. There are a couple dozen toy gridirons – and pieces of gridirons – in Kunera. All have fish on them. The gridiron we copied is in the Musee de Cluny.  Bruna gave it a date which seems too late in comparison with other similar examples where the dating is more secure. Our guess is the fifteenth century, but it could be as early as the fourteenth.

This toy has an adults-only sibling: a pendant gridiron with an astonishingly phallic fish replacing one of the ordinary ones.

Note: This gridiron is cast flat and then the feet are gently bent down to 90 degrees. We bend them before shipping, but if you prefer to bend them yourself (for example, because you are taking several of them to share with friends and you want to pack them flat(, let us know. We can send them unbent.
