Sun and Moon Brooch

$7.00

This large and beautiful object is a copy of a late fourteenth or fifteenth-century English brooch, probably a livery badge. The original was found in Salisbury. There is a record of a heraldic “visitation” to Wiltshire in 1623 which describes the arms of the Daunger (or de Aunger) family as a crescent moon with a sun between the horns. The herald cited evidence that the device was in use as early as the 14th century, so this may be a badge connected to that family.

In any case, it is a spectacular addition to your hat, and especially appropriate for anyone interested in astronomy and the celestial bodies.
