Diamond Spangles with Stones
$0.85 – $34.50 ($10 per dozen; single spangle sample is 85 cents. Rainbow mixes available)
These are exactly what you need to add to your hood, gown, or headdress to make people sit up and take notice! Excellent small, fancy spangles adapted from an early-fourteenth-century precious metal spangle from the Colmar treasure. The original was silver gilt, with a red glass stone.
The Colmar treasure is thought to have been left by a Jewish merchant who fled or was killed in the persecutions of Jews during the time of the Black Death; the objects represent a wide range of European secular goldsmith’s work from the 13th and 14th centuries. The dress ornament adapted here is dated late 13th to 14th century and may have been made in Italy.
All of the stones are glass. A stone name that is followed by (O) is opaque glass; although fire-polished, most are not “shiny”. All other stones are translucent and foiled; they reflect a lot of light and are quite bright.
We also have rainbow mixes. Our six-hued mix includes red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The seven-hued mix bridges the gap between green and blue with aquamarine:
One dozen spangles, 2 each of 6 hues ($10)
Fourteen spangles, 2 each of 7 hues ($11.50)
