We care about authenticity. We know many of you do as well. If you are a re-enactor who chooses items that come from clearly dated contexts, published by reputable scholars, or in well-documented museum collections, you can verify that information in our product descriptions. Each entry tells where the item was published and reports the date range given in the publication.
Remember that some dating is certain, but some is well-informed guesses. Items from archeological digs are dated to eras or ceramic phases that stretch over decades. Items retrieved from undated contexts (like the Thames, or a 19th-century collection, or a metal detector find in a field) are often dated by style. If an expert gives a date (or if we feel pretty sure of a date for a piece in our own collection) we have tagged our reproduction with that date. You will find these items on the Browsing pages. Our pastiches “in the style of the Middle Ages” will not show up. We count on you to read the description, follow up the citation or ask us a question, and make a decision.
