This adorable warlike denizen of the deep is copied after a brooch in the Yper Museum dated 1350-1400. There are a great many manuscript sources showing armed and armored mermen, mostly with sword and shield and often with helmets. The manuscript image in the gallery is from a manuscript of Jacob van Maerlant’s poem “Der Naturen Bloeme”, c. 1350.
