| There are numerous extant pieces related to this Plume Holder with
St. George. This example is closely related to one in the van Beuningen collection.
This collection contains other examples, as does that of the Salisbury and South
Wiltshire Museum. The plume holder has loops on the back so you can sew it to
your hat. Let us know if you'd like us to include a couple of feathers; as you
can see from the photo our color sense is impeccable. P-19 Plume Holder
with St. George $10.00 1-5/8 x 5/8" or 41 x 18mm #
van Beuningen, no. 256-260; Salisbury, no. 148-150 |
| St. Christopher, patron of travelers, is copied from a mid-15th
century Netherlandish example. P-18 St. Christopher $5.00 1-5/8
x 7/8" or 49 x 23mm * van Beuningen, no. 64

 | This
image of St. Sebastian is a copy of an early 15th century example. Sebastian
was venerated throughout Europe. He is the patron of archers and a protector against
the plague. He also has a special place in the hearts of serious re-enactors -
depictions of him are among the primary sources of information on medieval and
Renaissance men's underwear. The backing of this sign is pewter sheet painted
with a translucent red. P-3 St. Sebastian $7.00 1-1/2 x 1-1/4"
or 40 x 33mm * van Beuningen, no. 329 |
| The Crucifixion
in Pendant Frame is copied from an example in the van Beuningen collection.
Its use of interchangeable parts (other inserts which would fit in a frame of
the identical size also survive) is a clue to the enormous number of cheap religious
souvenirs and devotional objects which were made throughout the 14th and 15th
centuries. P-6 Crucifixion in Pendant Frame $5.00 1-3/8 x 1-1/8
or 36 x 28mm * van Beuningen, no. 86 |

 | The
Virgin and Child has a loop on the back to permit it to be sewn onto a
hat or cloak. If it was originally associated with a particular shrine we cannot
now identify it. This item is copied after one in our own collection. Van Beuningen
also has one - unlike ours, his retains the Virgin's head. Frankly speaking, his
collection is nicer than ours. P-10 Virgin and Child $3.00 1-3/8
x 1/2" or 36 x 14mm * van Beuningen, no. 535 |
| The
15th century original of the Hand of God Charm Holder is a sew-on pilgrim
sign, but we have adapted it as a brooch. The authentic one was found with a little
Tower, a sign of devotion to Saint Barbara, hanging from it. St. Barbara
is the patron saint of gunners, and she protects her supplicants against lightning.
BR-15 Hand of God Charm Holder $3.00 7/8 x 3/4" or 21 x 15mm #
van Beuningen, no. 48 BR-24 St. Barbara (tower) $3.00 1-1/8
x 1/4" or 28 x 6mm * van Beuningen, no. 48

 | The
Crucifix is based on a late 14th or early 15th century French example.
P-27 Crucifix $5.00 1-3/4 x 1-1/4" or 46 x 32mm *
Cluny, no. 47 |
| The Pelican is a symbol of self-sacrifice and, to the medieval
Christian, of Christ. This pewter brooch, painted with modern fake enamels, is
an adaptation of a 15th C. precious metal brooch. Please inquire if you would
like it fitted with pendant pearls. BR-24 Pelican $15.00 1-1/8
x 1/4" or 28 x 6mm ~ Lightbown |
